Timeless Games
No matter how far video games have come today, it is in the past that we look for games that made it all possible. Video games in general were in severe danger of becoming extinct in the early 1980s because of the gaming market crash at the end of the 1970s. If it was not for these landmark games, then there would have never been a video game market for the games of today to flourish in.
Some of the first computer sporting games came about in the mid 1980s. In 1984 one of the first sporting simulator games came out for the computer. Micro League Baseball came out and gave players a chance to manage the rosters of some of the greatest baseball teams in history. It was a new concept at the time and was the beginning of the obsession of giving the player a chance at managing a team. While the game did not let the player actually play the games, it did give the chance of seeing who would win in a series between 1927 Yankees and the 1978 Red Sox.
Of course, the most influential game in the 1980s was John Madden Football. The original game of the monster football franchise was on the computer and came out in 1988. Not long after Madden retired from being the head coach of the Raiders, he was asked to put his name on the game. The most important thing about this game is that it was one of the first football games to actually have all 22 players on the field at the same time. Madden himself would not let the game be published with anything less.
These games are just a couple examples of the classics that shaped the foundation for the games of present days. Without them, the video game market would be completely different or simply wouldnt exist at all. So even if these games dont look fantastic by todays standard or seem limited, remember that they are the pioneers that started the craze.
